There's endless debate about email length. Here's what the data actually shows.

The Data

Studies show optimal cold email length is 50-125 words.

  • Under 50 words: can feel incomplete
  • 50-125 words: highest response rate
  • Over 200 words: significant drop-off

Why Shorter Wins

Mobile reality: Most emails are read on phones. Long emails require scrolling, which most people won't do.

Attention spans: You have 8 seconds to make an impression. Every unnecessary word is a liability.

Respect: Short emails signal you value their time.

The Anatomy of a Short Email

Line 1: Hook (personalized or intriguing) Line 2-3: Value prop (what's in it for them) Line 4: CTA (one clear ask) Line 5: Signature

That's it. Everything else is probably filler.

When Longer Works

Exceptions exist:

  • Complex B2B sales with long cycles
  • Highly targeted, warm-ish leads
  • When you have specific, relevant intel

But even then, under 150 words.

The Trim Test

Write your email. Then:

  1. Delete the first paragraph (usually throat-clearing)
  2. Cut every sentence that doesn't add value
  3. Replace phrases with single words
  4. Read it out loud - cut anything that sounds like fluff

If you can say it in fewer words, you should.
